welcome to the rio mad hotel. thanks for checking in.

The hotel was built by survivors.

Not because survival is all we are, but because survival is something many of us have in common.

Some guests arrive carrying trauma. Some carry chronic illness. Some carry grief, loneliness, anxiety, neurodivergence, addiction, systemic oppression, questions about identity, or stories they’ve never felt safe enough to tell out loud. Some arrive with experiences that don’t fit neatly into any category at all.

Whatever brought you here, you don’t have to leave it at the door.

Rio Mad Hotel exists because we believe people deserve spaces where they can be honest about their lives without being reduced to their diagnoses, their symptoms, or the hardest things that ever happened to them.

We are interested in the full story. The complicated story. The funny story. The painful story. The story that changes over time. The story that refuses to fit into a box.

Curiosity over judgment.

We believe curiosity is more powerful than certainty.

Many of the experiences discussed here are misunderstood, stigmatized, politicized, or simplified beyond recognition. Rather than approaching people as problems to solve, we approach them as human beings. We ask questions, listen, and remain open to being surprised.

Survival is creative.

Humans are remarkably inventive.

Many of the things society labels as weaknesses, dysfunctions, or failures began as attempts to survive impossible situations. Whether we are discussing trauma, chronic illness, mental health, relationships, creativity, disability, systemic oppression, or identity, we are interested in the ways people adapt.

Not every adaptation serves us forever, but every adaptation has a story.

recovery is not one-size-fit-all.

We reject the idea that there is a single correct way to heal. People grow in different ways. They define success differently. Some people seek symptom reduction; some seek self-understanding; some seek community; and some simply want to make it through another day.

We believe individuals deserve agency in defining what healing means for themselves.

complexity is welcome here.

The world often demands simple answers. We are more interested in honest ones. People can be resilient and struggling; hopeful and grieving; confident and afraid; healed in some places and wounded in others. We do not believe complexity makes people broken. Complexity makes people human.

we take people seriously, not ourselves.

The Hotel serves heavy conversations, but not every conversation needs to be weighted. Expect laughter, absurd stories, pop culture tangents, existential questions, and occasional chaos. Humor has helped many people survive difficult things. We see no reason to leave it behind.

nothing about us without us.

Whenever possible, we prioritize lived experience. The people most affected by an issue deserve a voice in conversations about it. Experts and research are valuable, but so are the people living these realities every day. Story helps us relate to and understand one another.

conversations about survival.

At the heat of the Rio Mad Hotel is a simple belief: People deserve places where they can tell the truth about their lives. We’re not here to pretend, mask, perform, or become inspirational cautionary tales. We’re here to tell the truth.

So pull up a chair, pop in your headphones. The coffee may be cold. The neon sign outside flickers occasionally. Someone is probably oversharing in the lobby.

You’re welcome to stay as long as you need.
